Pest Control Insulation in Aurora, CO | Level Up Insulation

Insulate Your Home and Stop Pests at the Same Time

Aurora has a pest pressure problem that most homeowners don’t connect to their insulation — until they find it. Aurora’s position at the edge of the Colorado plains means higher rodent and insect pressure than most of the Denver metro. Mice, voles, earwigs, silverfish, and boxelder bugs enter homes through the same gaps and penetrations that allow air and heat to escape — and once inside, attic insulation is where they nest, contaminate, and cause damage.
Level Up Insulation installs TAP® Pest Control Insulation — a blown-in cellulose product treated with borate, a naturally occurring mineral that is lethal to insects on contact and deters rodents — as part of attic insulation projects across Aurora. It’s the only EPA-registered insulation product that functions as a pesticide, and it’s one of the most sensible upgrades available to Aurora homeowners who have dealt with attic pest problems.
Why Aurora

Why Aurora Homes Have More Pest Pressure Than Most Colorado Markets

Plains Proximity and Open Land

East Aurora in zip codes 80018 and 80019, and communities near E-470 like Sterling Hills, Murphy Creek, and Heritage Eagle Bend, are close to open agricultural and undeveloped land. Mice and voles that populate Colorado’s plains routinely seek shelter in residential homes as temperatures drop — entering through unsealed crawl space vents, foundation gaps, and utility penetrations. Once inside a warm attic with soft fiberglass insulation, a single pair of mice can become a colony within a season.

Cherry Creek State Park Adjacency

Aurora neighborhoods adjacent to Cherry Creek State Park — Shenandoah, Park Villas, Lakeshore — have elevated pressure from the wildlife habitat adjacent to residential properties. Squirrels, mice, and insects that populate the park buffer zone actively seek entry into homes in these neighborhoods throughout the year.

Older Construction with Unsealed Penetrations

Aurora’s pre-1990 homes — in Heather Ridge, Village East, Aurora Hills, and Hoffman Heights — were built before modern air sealing standards. Every unsealed pipe penetration, every open top plate, every uncapped recessed light is a potential pest entry point. Addressing these entry routes is part of what Level Up does as standard air sealing practice on every attic project — but TAP® insulation creates a lasting biological deterrent even after initial entry points are sealed.

HOW TAP WORKS

How TAP® Pest Control Insulation Works

TAP® (Thermal, Acoustical, Pest Control) insulation is blown-in cellulose treated with borates — naturally occurring minerals that have been used as pest control agents for decades. It works on two levels:
TAP pest elimination by Level Up Insulation Co. showing borate treated cellulose killing ants, cockroaches, termites, and silverfish on contact in Denver homes

For insects (ants, cockroaches, earwigs, silverfish, termites, boxelder bugs)

Borate adheres to insects as they move through the insulation, and when they groom themselves, the borate disrupts their digestive system and causes death. TAP® provides continuous insecticidal protection for the life of the insulation.
Rodent entry point sealing by Level Up Insulation Co. in a Denver attic with foam and steel mesh preventing mice from contaminating new insulation

For rodents

Borate-treated insulation is not as hospitable for nesting as untreated fiberglass or cellulose. Rodents detect and avoid borate-treated material, making TAP® a deterrent that reduces nesting behavior without requiring additional pest control measures.
TAP® is the only insulation registered with the EPA as a pesticide. It is safe for humans and pets after installation — borate has very low mammalian toxicity at the concentrations used in TAP®. It is installed by certified applicators, and Level Up Insulation is trained and certified to install TAP® throughout Aurora.

What TAP® Pest Control Insulation Delivers for Aurora Homes

  • R-value equivalent to standard blown-in cellulose (R-3.2 per inch) — full thermal performance to R-49
  • Sound attenuation: cellulose’s dense fiber structure reduces sound transmission through the attic floor
  • Continuous insecticidal action against common Aurora pests
  • Rodent deterrent that makes attics less hospitable for nesting
  • Non-toxic to humans, pets, and wildlife at installation concentrations
  • Installed as part of comprehensive attic air sealing and insulation service — not an add-on product

When Level Up Recommends TAP® for Aurora Homes

After Rodent or Pest Contamination Removal

If your Aurora attic insulation has been contaminated by rodents — requiring the insulation removal and sanitization we discuss on our dedicated page — TAP® pest control insulation as the replacement material makes excellent sense. You’ve already paid for removal; TAP® replaces standard cellulose at a modest premium and provides ongoing pest deterrence that standard cellulose doesn’t.

Homes Near Cherry Creek State Park or Open Plains

For Aurora homeowners in Shenandoah, Park Villas, Heritage Eagle Bend, Murphy Creek, and east Aurora communities near undeveloped land, the ongoing pest pressure justifies TAP® as a proactive investment. Standard insulation gets treated; TAP® treats back.

Aurora's Older Homes with History of Pest Entry

If you’ve dealt with mice, ants, or earwigs in your Aurora home in the past, TAP® insulation combined with professional air sealing of entry points is a comprehensive solution. Air sealing closes the entry routes; TAP® deters any pests that find alternative entry.
Cost in Aurora, CO

TAP® Pest Control Insulation vs. Standard Blown-In: Aurora Cost Comparison

TAP® typically costs 15–25% more than standard blown-in cellulose. For a typical Aurora attic insulation project, the premium is often $200–$600 over the standard cellulose cost. For homeowners who have previously paid for pest control service or insulation removal due to rodent contamination, this premium is usually easy to justify as a preventive measure.

TAP® qualifies as blown-in cellulose for Xcel Energy rebate purposes and for the federal IRA tax credit — the pest control function doesn’t reduce its rebate eligibility. See our complete Colorado insulation rebates guide for current program details. For overall Aurora insulation services and pricing, see our main Aurora hub page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our Pest Control Insulation

Yes. Borates have very low mammalian toxicity. The same mineral compound is used in many household products including some eye drops and contact lens solutions. At the concentrations used in TAP® insulation, it presents no health risk to humans or pets occupying the home. It is lethal to insects and deters rodents because they groom and metabolize the borate differently than mammals.

TAP® is a deterrent and part of a comprehensive pest management strategy — not a standalone rodent elimination product. Its primary role is making your attic less hospitable for nesting and providing ongoing borate exposure to insects. When combined with Level Up’s standard air sealing (which closes rodent entry points), TAP® significantly reduces pest establishment in the attic.

Only if the existing insulation is contaminated or severely degraded. If your existing attic insulation is in acceptable condition but below R-49, TAP® cellulose can be blown in on top as a top-off. If your insulation needs removal due to contamination, see our Aurora insulation removal page for the removal and replacement process.

TAP® is installed by certified applicators using the same blown-in equipment as standard cellulose. Level Up’s technicians are trained and certified to install TAP® and treat it as part of a complete attic insulation project — including comprehensive attic air sealing before any insulation goes in.
